Namibia national cricket team
The Namibia national men’s cricket team, also known as the Eagles, represents the Republic of Namibia in international cricket. The cricket team is organized by Na Bivia which became an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1993.
Before the independence of Namibia, the team representing South West Africa played in South Africa’s domestic competitions. And as Namibia joined the ICC, the country quickly became one of the major ICC associate members in Africa. Namibia finished second in the 2001 ICC Trophy.
History of the Namibia national cricket team
The earliest example of playing cricket dates back to 1909 when Windhoek was played. When South West Africa was a German colony. The area was invaded by South African troops during World War I, and a new game of cricket was played in several days of the war camp near Otjiwarongo.
At that time, South Africa occupied South West Africa after the defeat of Germany. It came under the mandate of the National Union in South Africa Group. After this, cricket started being played regularly in the West Province.
And in 1930 the South West Africa Cricket Association was also formed and the first organized matches were played in this area and South West Africa also started playing in the South African country’s annual competition in the 1962 season. This is how cricket started in the country.
Namibia’s 2003 World Cup clash
The road to the 2003 Cricket World Cup began with the 2001 ICC Trophy in Canada, with Namibia reaching the final at the Toronto Cricket Skating and Calling Club. At this time the country was still qualifying for its first World Cup after suffering a loss to the Netherlands. Similarly, the country also hosted the ICC 6th National Challenge in April 2002, when the country finished fourth in its group and defeated only Tanzania before losing four matches against Zimbabwe A. Bangladesh toured the country in January 2003 and won the one-day series 4–1.
